The following selection of Catholic prayers are for use in relation to death and dying. Some are intended for a specific point in an individual\u2019s journey, others for after death has occurred for use by family and friends. All should bring relief and some comfort at a very difficult time.<\/p>\n

Prayers at time of death<\/h2>\n

Go forth, Christian soul, from this world
\nin the name of God the almighty Father,
\nwho created you,
\nin the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
\nwho suffered for you,
\nin the name of the Holy Spirit,
\nwho was poured out upon you,
\ngo forth, faithful Christian,
\nMay you live in peace this day,
\nmay your home be with God in Zion,
\nwith Mary, the virgin Mother of God,
\nwith Joseph, and all the angels and saints.<\/p>\n

Catholic prayers for the dying and the sick<\/h2>\n

Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world,
\nwe pray for your servant N.,
\nand commend him\/her to your mercy.
\nFor his\/her sake you came down from heaven;
\nreceive him\/her now into the joy of your kingdom.
\nFor though he\/she has sinned,
\nhe\/she has not denied the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
\nbut has believed in God
\nand has worshipped his\/her Creator.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n

Father, your Son accepted our sufferings
\nto teach us the virtue of patience in human illness.
\nHear the prayers we offer for our sick brother\/sister.
\nMay all who suffer pain, illness or disease
\nrealize that they have been chosen to be saints
\nand know that they are joined to Christ
\nin his suffering for the salvation of the world.
\nWe ask this through Christ our Lord.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n

Prayers for a peaceful death<\/h2>\n

All praise and glory are yours, Lord our God,
\nfor you have called us to serve you in love.
\nBless all who have grown old in your service
\nand give N. strength and courage
\nto continue to follow Jesus your Son.
\nWe ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.<\/p>\n

Catholic prayers for the dying<\/h2>\n

When the moment of death seems near, the following prayer may be said:<\/em><\/p>\n

I commend you, my dear brother\/sister,
\nto almighty God,
\nand entrust you to your Creator.
\nMay you return to Him
\nwho formed you from the dust of the earth.
\nMay holy Mary, the angels, and all the saints
\ncome to meet you as you go forth from this life.
\nMay Christ who was crucified for you
\nbring you freedom and peace.
\nMay Christ who died for you
\nadmit you into his garden of paradise.
\nMay Christ, the true Shepherd,
\nAcknowledge you as one of his flock.
\nMay He forgive all your sins,
\nAnd set you among those He has chosen.
\nMay you see your Redeemer face to face,
\nAnd enjoy the vision of God for ever.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n

Short texts<\/h2>\n

What will separate us from the love of Christ? (Rom 8:35)<\/p>\n

Whether we live or die, we are the Lord\u2019s. (Rom 14:8)<\/p>\n

We shall always be with the Lord. (1 Thes 4:17)<\/p>\n

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. (Ps 25:1)<\/p>\n

Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death, no evil would I fear, for you are with me. (Ps 23:4)<\/p>\n

Prayers immediately after death<\/h2>\n

The following prayers may be recited immediately after death and may be repeated in the hours\u00a0that follow:<\/em><\/p>\n

Saints of God, come to his\/her aid!
\nCome to meet him\/her, Angels of the Lord!
\nReceive his\/her soul and present him\/her to God the Most High.<\/p>\n

May Christ, who called you, take you to Himself;
\nmay Angels lead you to Abraham\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

Give him\/her eternal rest, O Lord,
\nand may your light shine on him\/her forever.<\/p>\n

Let us pray.<\/strong>
\nAll-powerful and merciful God,
\nwe commend to you N., your servant.
\nIn your mercy and love,
\nblot out the sins he\/she has committed
\nthrough human weakness.
\nIn this world he\/she has died:
\nlet him\/her live with you forever.
\nThrough Christ our Lord.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n

These verses may also be used:<\/em><\/p>\n

V\/. Eternal rest grant unto him\/her, O Lord.
\nR\/. And let perpetual light shine upon him\/her.
\nV\/. May he\/she rest in peace.
